THE GREATEST PLAYER EVER!!!!ALFREDO DI STEFANO In 1949, the players went on a strike in Argentina and due to this many players moved to Colombia to play in the Di Mayor, a pirate league. this league was out of FIFA's jurisdiction, so no transfer fees had to be paid, so therefore the clubs in the league could afford to pay high salaries. Di Stefano joined Millonarios of Bogota, Nestor Rossi and Pederna also joined Alfredo at Millionarios. Millionarios became the best team ever in Colombia and still are considered so the team of those day achieved a nickname "Ballet Azul" or the "Blue ballet", for their precision, artistery and just cheer beauty. Alfredo scored incredible 267 goals in 292 games for Millonarios during his spell at Millionarios In the 4 years, Alfredo played there he scored enough goals to make him the second highest goalscorer in the entire history of Millionarios. The club won 4 league titles in 1949, 1951, 1952 and 1953. The Colombian national team could called Alfredo up to their team, even though he played for Argentina before. But their national team played very few matches in those days and so Alfredo only got 4 international caps for his newly adopted country. In 1953, Millionarios visited Spain as part of their world tour. The Colombian club was invited to play an exhibition match against at the time a mediocre team named Real Madrid. the game 50th anniversary in the club's undistinguished history. In this game, Spain unearthed a diamond that will later become the jewel of their crown. In Real's Charmatin stadium, the crowd witnessed a dynamic blond player. Di Stefano was magnificent in that game, not only impressive as a striker but also appearing in different parts of the pitch and performing all tasks. He showed his all-round qualities never seen in Europe before. Millionarios won the game and the tournament under Alfredo's dynamic leadership. Understandably, the Spanish clubs made inquiries for him almost immediately after the match. Entered Santiago Bernabeu, the ambitious president of Real Madrid. Real had not won any major trophies before. Bernabeu's intention was to make Real the most powerful club on the European soccer scene. To do so, he built a huge stadium six years earlier and in turn, needed to assemble a team of stars in order to fill the stadium with spectators. He saw Di Stefano as the ideal player to build his dream team around that can conquer Spain and beyond. Once they heard Barcelona is contacting Di Stefano's old club River Plate, Real Madrid flew their men to South America to negotiate a transfer with Millionarios. |
