In 1957 Puskas spent a year in Austria, due to political reasons in Hungary, but he failed to obtain a permit, and later several Italian clubs like AC Milan, Juventus to mention a few had found no interest in signing the player. In 1958 Real Madrid approached the player with a 16 000 euro sign on fee. Puskas teamed up with Real Madrid star player Alfredo Di Stefano to create maybe the most feared attacking force ever. Puskas won the Pichichi award 4 times for being the leading scorer in the Spanish Championship. And his most noteable moment for Real Madrid was his 4 goals in the 7-3 trashing of Eintracht Frankfurt in the European champions Cup in front of 135 000 at Hampden Park (still a record for attendance in European football.). Puskas played for Real Madrid until 1966 when he retired, for immidiately taking up coaching. Most notable moment as club coach came when he took Panathinaikos to the European cup final in 1971, a game Ajax won 2-0 at Wembley. In 1993 Puskas was caretaker manager for Hungary during the World Cup qualifiers. In 39 European matches he scored 35 times for Real Madrid. Ferenc Puskas played 80 games for Hungary in which he scored 83 times. This is still a record for a player on any national sides (Pele scored 77 times for Brazil in his career). He also played 4 times for the Spanish national side. Ferenc Puskas played 1300 games in his career and scored 1176 goals. The Federation of Football History and Statistics named Puskas the all time best scorer of the 20th century. On Puskas's 75th birthday (2002), the Hungarian government renamed the biggest football stadium, The Budapest "Nepstadion" (People's Stadium) to Ferenc Puskas Stadium. Puskas who had been hospitalised since October 2000 for arterhiosclerosis, turned to celebrate his birthday at the stadium with several prominent people like Alfredo Di Stefano, Emilio Butragueno, Gyula Grosics and Jeno Buzanszky, the chairman of Spanish Football Federation Angel Maria Villar, Hungarian Minister for Sports Tamas Deutsch and several other "famous" hungarian personalities and players.
