"Vincent, Man of Fire"
Today is the birthday of Vincent Van Gogh, b.1853 This man failed in so many areas and so many times, that a person wonders what will it take to become successful. The man was driven, alright. He went from job to job, and woman to woman, never finding peace. When he took up painting, he had the heart and passion of a genius, but the world didn't get it. They didn't want his paintings, either. He seemed to be a passionate and lonely man. When he was alive, it very likely would have been possible to obtain one of his paintings with a cup of coffee and a pleasing conversation. Picking up the tab for lunch would have been a nice touch, as he was poor. Poor because he was unemployable. Poor because he only sold one painting during his whole lifetime, and he needed help to do that! Poor because he was paid an allowance... by his artist brother. Here was a misfit if there ever was one. Passionate, yes once again, passionate to a genuine fault. He found an abandoned woman and mother on the streets and took her in, but couldn't keep her. He lost in love, but could write... and how he could write! Reading some of his several hundred letters is humbling to this writer, yet inspiring. He lost his ear after an argument and had the good sense to realize that he was insane, so he checked himself into an asylum. After some time of improvement (while vigorously painting) he was released, but shortly after, located a gun and shot himself.
If anyone is interested in learning how wrong things can go, how lost a soul can be, then please check out the links below. There is one that has some recommendations for further reading (from books). I think that I will go to the library soon after writing this and check out the FREE resources. After all, I've paid my taxes for years, eh? <wink> Being a wannabe artist, I also find the story of "Poor Vincent" to be inspiring. Of course, I have no desire to fall in love with women who do not want me, or to whack off an ear, but I like the idea of painting several hundred paintings in a year. Now, if only I could sell that many a year, I could retire comfortably! I already feel that I can rise to his rhetorical level on occasion with my correspondence, as any of my pen-friends will attest, due to the length and breadth of my letters. But then, Vincent didn't have access to the internet... imagine what he could have done then? In fact, I'm wondering how many Vincent Van Gogh's there are out there now, operating on the Internet and slicing off their virtual ears? ...scary thoughts?
Even more scary... I just realized that Vincent is 99 years older than me! <whew>

Poetry
Fly of Loneliness ~ Spider of Love
It is a catching concept,
this interplay we see.
The Fly of Loneliness
buzzing to and fro.
The Spider of Love,
spinning webs below.
Is this just a metaphor
for the you and the me?
Being metaphysical beings,
we can change our view.
Fly into loneliness,
looking endlessly in vain.
Spinning with abandon,
running from the rain.
Is it really a metaphor,
for the me and the you?
As if by a chance,
they randomly meet.
The Fly of loneliness,
of sudden came to rest.
The Spider of Love,
has honey in the nest.
The metaphor seems real,
so real and so sweet. Is this really a metaphor?
Is this really true?
Is this truly me?
Is this you?~fini ~
