"Young and Old"
This month is the birthday for several famous Painters. Last week was Raphael, born the 6th of April, 1483 and this Saturday will mark the birthday of Leonardo, born 500 years before this Zeditor. Okay, April 15th, 1452... if you must know. First off, Raphael wasn't really Raphael. Curiously, he was named Raffaello Santi, but he was more famous for painting many Madonnas. Not recently, because he was only a little bit younger than Leo himself. Funny thing is that I always remember seeing pictures of old Leo... well, old. But when I looked up Raphael, his likeness was invariably young. Perhaps the fact that there were no cameras in that day had something to do with it (unless Leonardo secretly had one), but I suspect it was more the idea that Raphael had this way of working a self-portrait into many of his paintings. Actually, there is a very good reason for this and I won't spoil the mystery, you'll have to check it yourself.
And what could I say about Leonardo DaVinci that hasn't already been said? There was so many references to this guy that I had to stop just when the going got interesting. After all, this is a digest, right? But I will add my two pennies worth to say that Leo really captured my imagination as a child. I remember my first longings to become an artist came into being with my first sighting of the Mona Lisa. And then my first true frustrations as I realized that I was no DaVinci. That smile really did me in, and I turned to drawing comics instead. Seems easier to explain my mistakes that way. <wink>
That's about all I want to say about these two really famous painters, except that they did more than just paint. After all, wasn't this the Renaissance? Check out the Art Links below and go for a fascinating journey. If you haven't done so in many years, then this will be a refresher treat. Why not sit with your kids and take the journey together. They didn't call these guys geniuses for nothing!

Poetry
On to the Beginning
Write through the pain,
it’s the poet’s way;
Right through the pain,
and into the fray.
Never lie down when
the going is rough;
Forever a frown when
the hide becomes tough.
Soften that skin to
feel with your heart;
Often we win
when the end is a start.Copyright © 2000 E.D.Griswold (aka Zedwaldo), all rights reserved.

JOKES?
There was a man who computed his taxes for 1998 and discovered that he owed $3407. He packaged up his payment and included this letter:
Dear IRS:
Enclosed is my 1998 Tax Return & payment. Please take note of the attached article from the USA Today newspaper. In the article, you will see that the Pentagon is paying $171.50 for hammers and NASA has paid $600.00 for a toilet seat. Please find enclosed four toilet seats (value $2400) and six hammers (value $1029). This brings my total payment to $3429.00. Please note the overpayment of $22.00 and apply it to the "Presidential Election Fund," as noted on my return. Might I suggest you the send the above mentioned fund a "1.5 inch screw." (See attached article...HUD paid $22.00 for a 1.5 inch Phillips Head Screw.) It has been a pleasure to pay my tax bill this year, and I look forward to paying it again next year.
Sincerely,
A satisfied taxpayer
