The Legend of Pandora's Box

"Jupiter, angry at Prometheus because of the stolen fire he had abstracted from heaven and handed over to the mortals, and wishing to take his revenge by a similar fraud, commanded Vulcan to form out of clay, as skillfully as he could, the image of a maiden. This done, he asked all the gods and goddesses each to bestow a gift upon this image; hence, it appears, the maiden was named Pandora. This maiden, then, showered with all the gifts of beauty, grooming, intelligence, and eloquence, was sent to Prometheus with a box, it, too, most beautiful in shape but concealing every kind of calamity. Prometheus refused this present and admonished his brother not to accept any present delivered in his absence. Pandora returns, captivating Epimetheus and presenting the box to him. As soon as he had opened it, so that the evils flew out, and as soon as he had realized that Jupiter's gifts were 'no-gifts,' he surely became a wise man too late."
