Welcome to Outside the X, where you'll learn more about those characters and books that make up the Marvel Universe, but are not part of the X-Family. Each month, a new article, featuring a different Marvel character, will be highlighted here, as well as links to previous articles. If you have any questions or comments about what you read, you can e-mail the author, David, here: [email protected].

What Marvel Needs Pt. 1
by David Ivanick

Well, Marvel needs a lot of things. I could go into what format comics should be put in, what propaganda they need to use, etc. But I won't. I'm here to focus on the stories, plain and simple. So that's what I plan to be focusing on.

Marvel needs an anthology title again, plain and simple. Some of you out there in ComputerLand might not know what an anthology title is. An anthology title is a title with no set writer, artist, or even no set character that is focused on. It is made up of different story arcs that are not connected to each-other.

Why does Marvel need this? Well, somewhere along the way a couple of things happened for Marvel. Somewhere along the line, they lost sight of the fact that the Marvel Universe is a big place full of interesting characters. I understand that not every character could support their own book. I know that some of my favorite characters could not support their own book no matter how good the book was. But that's one of the reasons for having a book like this. Imagine, Marvel could have a book in which different characters were tested out. Using an anthology title, Marvel could determine weather a character could support his own title or not. They could test out new creators or build up the popularity of a creator. Maybe they could even try out a new format. Another reason an anthology title would be great is that it could be a way to get new readers. A new reader doesn't want to start reading a title in the middle of a story-arc and realize that he needs a lot of back issues that he has to hunt for in order to understand what may be a mediocre story. An anthology title could be something a comic-shop owner could recommend to new readers as a starting point. Maybe Marvel could experiment by trying some high-profile creators from other books out on Marvel's comics. It would be a chance to see a different light for Marvel, one that wasn't definitely so based on superheroes. The possibilities really are endless.

There are many reasons to create an anthology title at Marvel. It would never be the highest selling book, true. But there are a lot of benefits to having an anthology title.
