"Heading Towards The Political" by David (Rhyme)
The X-Books have taken a step into a mostly unexplored territory. Well, one X-Book has. Too bad it's a limited series. Magneto Rex is simply amazing, and the potential for this series is astounding. It's set up beautifully. You take one mutant, and give him a nation. And then the series plays off that by seeing different people's views on the situation. We see leaders all around the world reflecting on the UN's decision to give Magneto a country. On the first page, we see what Black Panther, Captain America, Moira MacTaggert, and Gabrielle Haller's views.
And then the books shifts to a slightly different focus on the second page. We see that allthough Magneto is the ruler of this nation, he does not have complete power over it. His own people are shooting at him! We see his powers are weakening, and it's not certain that he'll be able to rule this country with sovereignty. So we have two different foundations for this series, and they are strong foundations indeed.
One good thing about Magneto Rex is that it doesn't focus totally on Magneto. Some other series have made the mistake of just playing on Magneto's power. No, this series is Magneto as a man, and it focuses on the inner conflicts of his supporting characters. And that's probably the best part of this issue. "No man is an island." And no government is one man. Joe Pruett realizes this, and he and Brandon Peterson create some great new characters, and use some characters ot their own. Here are our great supporting characters-
Dared- this mutate takes Magneto in, and shows him Genosha. He shows him that allthough Magneto has supreme power, he does not fully understand Genosha, and will need some help doing that. He has all the inside news.
Alda Huxley- What can I say? She's brilliant. She's playing Magneto. In one hand, she's giving Magneto a silver platter. In the other, she has a knife to slit his throat. She's playing him to get the power she craves.
Amelia Voght- Yeah, she's Magneto's pawn, and servant. She's so desperate to find a purpose that she'd follow Magneto. Right now her job's to keep Quicksilver under surveillance. She's proud of Pietro for escaping his father's legacy, yet she's there to draw him back in. She's probably the most interesting supporting character, because we really get to see her inner conflicts.
Quicksilver- His whole life, he's been trying to escape his father's legacy. Yet he keeps getting drawn back in. He realizes that his father is mad, and knows that one day he'll have to confront him. He has some inner conflict as well, because he knows that Magneto is mad, but he fears that giving Magneto Genosha was the right choice. Maybe Genosha can only be saved by Magneto.
Rogue- This series does some great stuff for Rogue. She's taken away from Gambit (praise the Lord,) and in doing so...she's not the whiny child she was. She's a foxy woman. She knows two Magneto's. One is the Magneto that is inhumane, and similar to Hitler. The other is a kind man who she almost fell in love with in the Savage Land. The question that plagues her, is-Which one is the real Magneto?
MAGNETO'S COUNCIL
Philip Moreau- He fells partly responsible for the civil war, because his father created the mutate slave race.
Jenny Ransome- The Chancellor of Genosha's Probationary Government. Not much has been shown on her.
Pipeline- He's human...yet he sides with the mutates. Magneto is partly afraid that Pipleline may betray them, and so there's a conflict between Magneto and Pipeline.
THE OPPOSER
He feels that Magneto does not understand Genosha, and so he must be taken down to let the Mutates rule.
Like I said, this series is amazing. Brandon Peterson's artwork fits the book perfectly. This is probably the best miniseries ever for the X-Men.
