YUME NASHI NO YUUMEI NOTES

Yume Nashi no Yuumei is my first attempt at writing a song in a completely different language; in this case, Latin. I wanted this song to be in Latin because I wanted it to have the same feel to it as other songs sung in Latin, such as Liberi Fatali (FF8), Katayoku no Tenshi (FF7), and Dance of Curse (Escaflowne); plus one song sung in Japanese, Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku (Shoujo Kakumei Utena: Adolescence Mokushiroku), which could only be cooler if it was sung in Latin. I am not fluent in Latin (but then, who is anymore?), so there are probably mistakes. However, I'm happy with the lyrics as they are now.

Yume Nashi no Yuumei, both in title and in lyrics, has a very distinct flavour of a duel song from Shoujo Kakumei Utena. Whether or not this was intentional, I really can't tell. All I can tell is, my intention was to deliberately shock. I want this song to send shivers down the spines who read (and eventually listen to, I hope) it, I want it to make people wonder what drove me to create something so terrible. (Of course, I'll never have my desired effect until there is music to it...)

The title of Yume Nashi no Yuumei is a pun in itself, which is not apparent when you refer to it by its translated name, Hades Without Dreams. Yume is the word for dream, and yuumei means a land of the dead/hades; however, the only thing separating them is the extention or addition of a vowel sound. The true meaning and significance of the title is up to the reader to decipher.

In the stanzas that do not include vale (farewell), the adjectives are switched around until each line has a different adjective, but not one that hasn't been used by one of the other lines. The word for suddenly used in the lyrics is intentional; it resembles the word repent. As for fatalis, this Latin adjective can mean either fateful, as in relating to destiny or fate, or predetermined by fate; or, fatal, as in deadly. Although any of these three meanings would be appropriate, I chose to translate it as fatal.

Although there is no music composed yet, I already have what I want Yume Nashi no Yuumei to sound like planned out. The tone should be mysterious, somewhat melancholy, disturbing, intense, and ominous of danger; the feeling of danger in the song should rise as it continues. The intensity of both the vocals and the music should increase slowly as the music builds, the heighten dramatically in the last two stanzas, as the chorus and the music blend together. The very end should be a complete and sudden stop; no music trailing off, no echoes, no anything, just as if it had been cut off.
