The Poet
10/10/95

The poet is an artist--understand
He cannot draw a picture with his hand
He doesn't paint on canvas
And he doesn't carve in stone
The poets' art is only in his verse
The poet paints his pictures with words

The poet writes down words from in his heart
He has no audience to hear his art
You won't see his work hanging on an old museum wall
You won't see him performing in any concert hall
The forum for his poems is unknown
The poet as an artist stands alone

Now I, for one, still love the spoken word
And I believe the poet should be heard
They're not seeking money and they aren't seeking fame
They only wish to show the heart from which their passion came
He doesn't seek applause, now can't you see?
The poet writes for love of poetry
