The Thunder Rumbled Warning
8/8/99

I walk into the lonely yard
When all the rest have gone
I couldn't be with others now
I had to come alone
And nature sympathizes with
The aching in my heart
A storm is fast approaching
And the skies are growing dark

As the thunder rumbled warning
And the breeze began to blow
I gazed upon the barren ground
Where grass will someday grow
And I touched the chiseled name
Upon the newly planted stone
And the wind blew through the branches
With a melancholy moan

I fall upon my knees
My bloodshot eyes raised to the sky
And cry up to the heavens
Tell me why, Lord, tell me why
What purpose do you have
To leave me here a wretched shell
And take my love to Heaven
Damning me to my worst Hell

And the thunder rumbled warning
And the rain began to fall
And the fallen leaves from autumn
Rustle out a raspy call
And the wet clothes chill my body
And they're sticking to my skin
And I mourn the loss of one who's heart
Will never beat again

In vain, I railed against the sky
The only answer: rain
At last I fall to silence
All encompassed in my pain
I rest my weary head against
The polished granite face
And wonder if I'll have the strength
To leave this dreary place

And the thunder rumbled warning
And the lightning laced the sky
And the rain is pelting down upon
The ground where you now lie
And the raindrops dripping from my cheeks
Are mingled with my tears
As I'm missing you already
As I will for all my years
