"Write this letter for me, Miss Jones, you know what I want to say.
If it's good I'll take all the credit - if not, I'll dock you your pay.
Go see if the coffee is ready yet, without it you know I get cross."
Miss Jones races hither and thither all day to appease her employer and boss. |
For What? She often asks herself, as she packs up for the day.
Why put up with his temper fits - you crazy girl - why stay?
The money's not good, the journey is long - half an hour by train and a bus:
And when she gets home she's exhausted - yet, she never makes a fuss. |
She dare not take long lunch hours, nor does she come in late;
But stays on unpaid over time - Cinderella incarnate!!
Her friends think she's just stupid, that she'll be old before her time
That to work so hard for so little reward is tantamount to crime! |
But Miss Jones is no-one's fool, you see, she's waiting - biding time:
For the rungs of the ladder to success are often hard to climb.
To others it seems quite ludicrous, but to her it makes good sense
To use this first job as a stepping stone to gain experience. |
