SOME RECOLLECTIONS OF MY FATHER As a young man my father was a jazz musician, and he played the banjo in the Paul Whitman orchestra. Dick Powell, who later became a famous actor was the male vocalist. As the jazz era came to an end, and the stock market crashed in 1929, Jim found work in a variety of jobs. He drove laundry routes, sold and repaired radios and did assembly line work. Sometime in 1933 he moved to Montrose, California where his mother and father had settled. During the depression Jim was on a WPA Music Project, and he finally found his nitch as an electrician. During WW II he worked as a journeyman on several big construction projects in California and the Southwest. By the time the second photo above was taken he was an electrician. The name "Boppy" was given to him by my sister Betty Jane when Jim became a grandfather, just as "Wawy" was given to my mother. The names stuck, and they are engraved on the headstones of their graves near La Crescenta, California. Jim was very handy with tools and Mike, his grandson, once said, "My Boppy can fix anything." Mike was right.
