There wasn't much super about Super Tuesday, was there? Here we are still some months away from the national conventions, let alone the main event, and we know who will be each parties sacrifice on the altar of public opnion, Al Gore and George W. Bush. The Bradley campaign never really got across mid court while John McCain's sole reason for running seemed to be the fact that he was a POW in Vietnam. Don't get me wrong. For a Republican, McCain is a good man. He even went after Pat Robertson, Jerry Fallwell and their ilk in a speech that many say sealed his fate. But if almost losing an arm in World War II isn't good enough for Elizabeth Dole's husband to be president, then being a POW in Vietnam isn't good enough for some hot tempered guy from Arizona to be president.
So now we are left with speculation as to who each candidate will pick as his running mate. There is a school of thought that says Bush will chose McCain. It worked in 1960 when JFK asked LBJ to be his running mate. They were bitter rivals during the campaign but managed to work together to steal Chcago and Texas from Tricky Dick Nixon. Of course, LBJ then was part of the plot to kill Kennedy..... but now I'm starting to sound like Oliver Stone.
Another name that keeps popping up in GOP circles is Colin Powell. But I've got to think that Powell would never be the second man in charge, especially to a party boy like George W. On the Democratic side, a name I keep hearing is Jim Hunt, the governor of North Carolina, after Bradley pulled his own name out of the hat. Perhaps the reason I keep hearing Hunt's name come up is that the radio station I listen to more than any other, WBT, is out of Charlotte.
Hey! Maybe Michael Reagan is available.
Of course, none of this really interests me. We'll find out in time who the number two guy (or gal) will be. In the meantime, what? Unless some major relevation comes out against George W., it seems a definite lull will ensue until the real contest heats up. I've been trying to come up with how the recent swing in events will affect the race. It seems it could only make both candidates stronger. There won't be any body within their own parties tearing them down, other than Alan Keyes, who, let's face it, is a wacko. So, from the looks of things, we'll have to wait until the summer for the real excitement. To be honest, the whole Road to the White House looks like a boring interstate this time around. And all the traffic on this stretch of road is stuck at 40 miles per hour.
But there is a variable in this. Pat Buchanan, the Nazi loving former speech writer for Richard Nixon is still out there, now on the side of the Reform Party. (They'll probably need to reform after he gets through with them.) Let's not forget what he did for Bill Clinton and the Democrats in 1992. His anti abortion, anti minorities, anit women, anti anything other than white men speech at the Republican Convention scared the fuck out of a lot of people. And George W.'s father and Lil Danny Quayle was never the same. There is a school of thought out there that says Buchanan could do much the same this year for Al Gore. It plays out this way: all the nut jobs within the GOP will jump ship and vote for him, taking away votes from Party Boy Bush.
I only hope this is what happens. While I am not a big Gore man, the thought of George W. Bush in the White House scares me almost as bad as the idiots who ran the place from 1980 to 1992.
So, in closing, get out there and vote, people. And vote Democrat!
