Questions Kids Ask About God

Question: Why did they beat up Jesus?

Answer: Some people got very angry at Jesus because He was speaking against the bad things they were doing. They tried to get Jesus to do what they wanted. Instead, Jesus did what God wanted him to do, and He told everybody how bad those people were. Finally the people got so angry at Jesus that they wanted to kill Him. And eventually, that's what they did.

Key Bible verses:
Mark 15:16-19Matthew 26:57-68

My views:
Back then, there wasn't Amnesty International or the foreign press which could ensure that Jesus' trial was done fairly. There was no student demonstration or rallies in support of Jesus. There was no foreign heads of state who criticize the arrest of Jesus. Basically, no one came to Jesus' aid during His ordeal. There was no justice but Jesus had to suffer for a divine purpose. Jesus' mission was not political but a divine one. It wasn't about overthrowing the government or bringing political reform, but it was about bringing salvation to sinners and the world.
This divine purpose was revealed in the Book of Isaiah (in the Old Testament) which was written by the prophet Isaiah about 700 years before the birth of Christ. Isaiah wrote that "He (Jesus) was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open his mouth; He was led like a lamb to the slaughter." (
Isaiah 53:4-7) What God had revealed to Isaiah came to being about 700 years later when they crucified Jesus at Calvary.
