| PAST ISSUE # 40 Questions Kids Ask About God Question: What is idolatry? Answer: Idolatry is when people worship or pay divine honour to a created thing, such as an animal, symbol, image, or object. In the Old Testament, the Israelites worshipped a golden calf, and this displeased God greatly (Exodus 32:2-10). The Israelites were also guilty of idolatry when they worshipped other gods (1 Chronicles 5:25). Key Bible verses: Exodus 20:1-7; Leviticus 26:1; Romans 1:25; 1 John 5:21; Revelation 16:2 My views: Idolatry comes in many forms other than worshipping a created thing. We are guilty of idolatry if we put an object or activity higher than God. Money or material possession can be an idol if we place its value higher than God. Playing golf or surfing the internet can be an idol if it takes us away from worshipping God and reading the Bible. As such, we must examine ourselves for any idols in our life and ask God to forgive us of our idolatry. Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, I want to confess to You my sins of idolatry. Please forgive me for putting (list items, e.g. money, car, computer games, school work, etc) higher than You. Please forgive me for worshipping other gods and dabbling with ungodly activities. I want to repent of these sins and ask You to cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for forgiving my sins and giving me the gift of eternal life. Amen. Last words... "Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.'" (Matthew 22:37-38) Next |
