Questions Kids Ask About God

Question: Why are there so many different types of churches?

Answer: When Jesus was on earth, He commissioned His apostle, Peter to build His Church (Matthew 16:18-19). After Jesus rose to heaven, His apostles obeyed His commandment to spread the Gospel from Jerusalem to many cities of the Roman Empire (Mark 16:15). The Book of Acts tells us how the apostles preached the good news and planted churches throughout the Roman Empire. In due time, the Church became powerful after she received support from the Roman Empire. The Church made her headquarter in Rome which is the reason why she is known as the Roman Catholic Church. In the late 1600s, a priest by the name of Martin Luther protested against the Roman Catholic Church because he disagreed with certain Church teachings. Luther was excommunicated and the reformation movement began. Today, there are generally two types of churches - Roman Catholic and Protestant. Even though, the Roman Catholic and Protestant Churches may differ in their teachings and traditions, there is only one body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27).

My views:
This is an extremely difficult question to answer. No one really knows the answer but some church history may help us to understand better. It is very confusing and certainly displeases God who demands unity in the body of Christ. As for myself, I became a Christian in a Protestant Church. I have family members and friends who are Roman Catholics and Protestants. But, I consider them my brothers and sisters in Christ. Why? Well, I will try to answer that question in the next QKAG issue.

Last words...
"And God placed all things under His feet and appointed Him to be head over everything for the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way." (Ephesians 1:22-23)
