Questions Kids Ask About God

Question: Why should we be Christians if all religions teach us to be good?

Answer: It is true that most major religions, including Christianity, teach their followers to be good. However, not all religions are the same. If one does a comparative study of the major religions, one would discover that there are irreconcilable differences in their teachings. Being a Christian is more than being good, it is a proclamation and demonstration of our love and faith in Christ Jesus. We become Christians because we want to follow Jesus and have eternal life. In addition, we do good not to earn our salvation but to glorify God, and share His love and grace with our brothers and sisters (Matthew 25:40; 1 Corinthians 10:31).

Key Bible verses:
Isaiah 29:13; Jeremiah 16:20; Hosea 6:6; Matthew 6:7, 7:21; Galatians 4:8

My views:
It is difficult living in a multi-cultural and religious nation like Singapore because I am constantly exposed to diverse religious beliefs and teachings. I thank God that the number of Christians are growing in Singapore but the percentage is still small. The majority of Singaporeans are either Buddhists or Taoists. Sometimes, it is difficult to share Christ with my non-Christian friends as they have the misconceived notion that all religions are the same or equal. My friends figure that doing good alone is sufficient for a place in heaven. Several of my liberal Christian friends also have the same belief that all religions lead to God the Father! I find it disheartening that they are blinded and have yet to know the truth. I pray continually for their salvation so that they will one day know that "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12) And that name is Christ Jesus. Related topic in Issues # 17, 18, 23

Prayer:
Lord Jesus,  I thank You for showing me the truth and the way to salvation. I am sad when I see so many of my love ones and friends have yet to know You personally. I pray that You will one day remove their spiritual blindness and touch their hearts. I pray that You will tear down any barriers and bind any bondages that are preventing them from knowing the truth. I lift (list names of non-Christian family members and friends) to Your loving hands. As for myself, I ask for Your Holy Spirit to empower and guide me so that I may bring the good news to many people. I ask all of these in Your precious and mighty Name. Amen.

Last words...
"There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." (Proverbs 14:12)
