Questions Kids Ask About God

Question: Who is the Holy Spirit?

Answer:
The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Godhead which includes God the Father and God the Son. The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son (Matthew 28:19). Therefore, He is also omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, eternal, and loving as the other persons in the Godhead. The Holy Spirit can even be grieved if we sin (Ephesians 4:30). When Jesus ascended to heaven, God sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in us (2 Timothy 1:14), and to teach and guide us (John 14:26). This is why we are called the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). Related topic in Issue # 27.

Key Bible verses:
Genesis 1:2; 1 Corinthians 1:21-22, 2:4-6, 10; 2 Corinthians 5:5, 13:14

My views:
When I became a Christian, I did not know much about the Holy Spirit. Till now, I must confess that I do not know a lot about the Holy Spirit. Only recently have I started to get to know Him better. In actuality, the Holy Spirit plays a very significant role in the life of a Christian. As the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 1:21-22, God has anointed us and set His seal of ownership on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. So, this raises an interesting question for us, how do we know that the Holy Spirit is in our hearts? I believe that every believer has the Holy Spirit in his or her heart (Acts 15:8). But, as a deposit in our hearts, the amount of Holy Spirit may differ from one believer to another (Acts 11:24). A mature Christian may be more Spirit-filled than a new Christian but this is not always the case. Most new Christians I know are probably more Spirit-filled and "on fire" than the "older" Christians who have become lukewarm. Therefore, it is essential that we ask God to fill us daily with the Holy Spirit. In the next QKAG issue, we will explore more on the topic of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer:
Merciful God,  I want to ask for Your forgiveness of my sins of the flesh. Please forgive me for defiling my body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and in turn grieving the Holy Spirit. I thank You for giving me the deposit of the Holy Spirit in my heart. I thank You for not taking away the Holy Spirit when I have sinned against You. Right now, I ask that You anoint me and refresh my spirit with the Holy Spirit. Father God, I also ask that You teach me how to listen to the voice of Your Holy Spirit as I want to be taught, empowered and guided by You. I also ask that You will continue governing me in the path of righteousness. Thank You, Father God for Your Holy Spirit. In Your Son's precious name, I pray. Amen.

Worship:

Click here to sing along to "Sweet, Sweet Spirit"

There's a sweet sweet Spirit in this place,
And I know that it's the Spirit of the Lord.
There are sweet expressions on each face,
And I know that it's the presence of the Lord.

Chorus:
Sweet Holy Spirit,
Sweet Heavenly Dove,
Stay right here with us
Filling us with Your love.
And for these blessings
We lift our hearts in praise;
Without a doubt we'll know
That we have been revived,
When we shall leave this place.

There are blessings you cannot receive
Till you know Him in His fullness, and believe.
You're the one to profit when you say,
"I am going to walk with Jesus all the way."

(Jesus is speaking) "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." (John 14:26)
