| PAST ISSUE # 62 Questions Kids Ask About God Question: What does it mean to have freedom in Christ? Answer: We have freedom in Christ when we invite Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. This is because we are no longer under condemnation for our sins, rather we have been freed from death and sin (Romans 6:6-11, 8:1-2). This is what Christians call freedom in Christ. To have freedom in Christ also means that we no longer follow the Law of Moses, i.e. getting circumcised or refraining from eating certain types of food. As Christians, we do not follow the Law of Moses because Jesus has superseded the old covenant established by God and the Israelites in the Old Testament (Hebrews 9:15). As a result of Jesus' perfect sacrifice, God established a new covenant based on grace rather than the old covenant which was based on the Law. This is the reason why we are saved by grace and not by obeying the law (Romans 3:19-20; Ephesians 2:8-9). Key Bible verses: Luke 4:18-19; Romans 8:21; 1 Corinthians 8:9; Galatians 5:1, 13; 1 Peter 2:16 My views: Most Christians think that they can do everything they want because they have freedom in Christ. Yes, it is true that we are free from condemnation but we cannot continue to do bad things simply because we have been saved by grace. It is wrong to think that we are saved no matter what we do. It is possible for Christians to lose our salvation if we continue to sin and fail to ask for God's forgiveness (Hebrews 10:26-27). As Christians, it is true that we do not have to follow mandatory religious rituals such as being circumcised, obeying the Sabbath, or eating only unleavened food. However, there must be a certain guideline to Christian living. So, how do we live as Christians? Find out in next week's issue. Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank You for establishing a new covenant through the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus. I thank You that I am justified by faith through Your Son (Romans 3:23-24, 5:1-2). I thank You that I am cleansed and deemed righteous by You because of my faith in Your Son (Romans 3:22, 4:5). I thank You that I am freed from death and sin through Your Son. Truly, I am nothing without Your Son. I praise and exalt You, God of grace! In eternal gratitude, Amen. Last words... (Jesus is speaking) "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32) Next |
