Questions Kids Ask About God

Question: What is faith?

Answer: According to Hebrews 11:1, faith is "being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." It is like putting our trust in a person who made a promise to us. For example, your parents promise to buy you an ice-cream tomorrow after school. Today, you don't have the ice-cream yet but you have faith in your parents that they will buy you the ice-cream when tomorrow comes. It is similar to our faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus promised to give us eternal life if we believe in Him (John 5:24). Do we enjoy eternal life yet? No, but we look forward to the day when we will meet Jesus again and He will fulfill His promise of granting eternal life to His followers.

Key Bible verses:
2 Corinthians 5:7; Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 2:8; 2 Timothy 2:13; Hebrews 10:23; 11

My views:
I must confess that sometimes my faith is not as strong as I would like it to be. For instance, I know that God can heal people but a part of me sometimes thinks otherwise (Exodus 15:26). I know that God has been doing great things in my life and that of my love ones but a part of me wonders if He will be there when I die. I know that God loves me but a part of me doubts His love for me.
Am I loosing my faith? Certainly not. My faith is merely being tested by God. He tests our faith because He wants us to be stronger in our faith at the end (
James 1:3; 1 Peter 1:7). When I doubt God's healing power, He heals my grandfather of his deafness at a recent healing service. When I doubt in God's existence, He reminds me of my many answered prayers. When I doubt God's love for me, He reassures me in the Scriptures and through the numerous blessings He has showered upon me.
So, do you sometimes feel like I do? Has your faith be tested much that you almost gave up your faith? Rest assured that God knows your doubts and weaknesses. He wants to see how well you can pass the test like Abraham (
Genesis 22:2-18). Related topic in Issues # 55, 63.

Prayer:
Father in Heaven, I often doubt Your existence, Your power, and Your love. Please remove all doubts in me by assuring me through Your Spirit, Your Word and Your people. Please forgive me when I feel like giving up because it is so difficult living the Christian faith. Please protect me from the evil one for I know that he aims to plant doubts in me so that I will no longer follow You. Empower me by Your Spirit to withstand all trials and tribulations in the present and future. I praise and exalt You over my life - my strengths and weaknesses, my joys and despairs, and my hopes and disappointments. In Jesus' Name, I pray. Amen.

Last words...
"the righteous will live by his faith" (Habakkuk 2:4)
