The mosaics in Paphos are beautiful. Only the floors are left of the old Roman villas, minutely covered in intricate coloured patterns - what would it have been like to walk on works of art? Now we're elevated from them, trampling over the wooden bridges like a flock of sheep.

A guide ahead of us is addressing a group of German tourists. I try to make out something of her story about the mythological figures below, but her voice doesn't carry too well or I've forgotten more German than I thought.

In the middle of one of the mosaics there's an obviously modern hatch breaking up the pattern, reminding me that people do have different ideas on how to treat ancient artefacts.
