Foundation Skills - A short course designed for:
  • trainee managers, assistant managers or new managers needing some skills development
  • graduate recruits with a future career in management roles
  • experienced workers seeking to develop a career path in management, or
  • young/ inexperienced workers with well- developed skills, recognised "management potential" and demonstrated commitment.


Five modules are presented in five half-day sessions. Each session runs for four hours of group learning time plus refreshment breaks. Participants are expected to attend all five sessions in sequence.

Outcomes - participants will:

  • learn through interactive, experience-based group activities
  • be introduced to current theories of business and organisational managment in a practical, workplace-relevant context
  • develop and practice interpersonal skills needed by managers in all industries
  • undertake practical assignments or learning projects in the workplace
  • be encouraged and guided to work with a mentor in their workplace, and make use of contacts and networks.
 

Materials provided include:
  • a workbook with session notes, readings and learning activities for each module 
  • a guide to working through the course, for participants and workplace mentors
  • a portfolio "shell" with practical assignments and project instructions to develop a portfolio of evidence of competence, for performance appraisal and/or assessment purposes.
A certificate confirming attendance and participation is issued on completion of the course. While the course does not include formal assessment of participants? competence, or issue an accredited qualification, participants can use the the portfolio of evidence towards assessment for any relevant credential. 

Accessing the course

Employers and training providers can assist employees and trainees to access this course by:
  • sponsoring individuals to attend, on a fee-per-person basis, or
  • sponsoring the whole program for your own group - up to 18 people - at a suitable venue and negotiated times, for a set fee.

    Module 1 - Self-management - Leading by example
Content:
Preview of whole course content and processes; introduction to basic psychology of motivation and success; explores proactive attitude & self-discipline; a practical focus on goal setting - personal vision & mission, objectives, work plans; time management principles and practices; competence and professional development; keeping a balance - stress management & personal development.

Learning Outcomes

On completing, participants should be able to;

    • >Identify their own strengths and needs in self-leadership and self-management,
    • Describe and discuss the relationship between needs, values, motivation and behaviours,
    • Articulate a personal vision and SMART goals for success,
    • Plan, organise and act effectively to achieve goals.
 
     
    Module 2 - Communicating effectively
Contents:
Expands on personal effectiveness (module 1) towards developing interpersonal effectiveness.

Articulates a model for communication; communication styles and perception filters; communication roles and functions in the workplace; empathy, rapport and influencing techniques.

Reviews & refines basic skills - Active listening, questioning for different purposes, accurate and assertive delivery;

Writing effectively and efficiently for business correspondence.

  Learning Outcomes
On completing, participants should be able to:
    • Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication skills including active listening, open-ended and precision questions, and presenting information effectively,
    • Demonstrate empathy and establish rapport with others including colleagues, managers and clients,
    • Identify and discuss their own communication styles,
    • Identify and discuss strategies for positively and ethically influencing the behaviour of others,
    • Write business documents to a relevant enterprise or industry standard.
 
     
    Module 3 - Conflict management & negotiation
Contents:
Applies motivation and goals theory from Module 1 and communication skills from Module 2 in a win/win framework.

Explores: emotional elements, and appropriate responses, in conflicts; needs and fears; forms and uses of power; processes for mapping conflicts and problem-solving. Articulates models of conflict, and processes for negotiation and mediation.

Learning Outcomes
On completing, participants should be able to:

    • Identify, recognise and anticipate the development of conflicts and potential conflicts within work relationships,
    • Recognise and respond positively to others? conflict and behaviour styles,
    • Deal effectively with substantive and emotional elements of conflict, including defusing aggression where appropriate,
    • Use win/win problem-solving strategies and techniques to clarify and resolve conflicts,
    • Achieve win/win agreements with others by effective negotiation.
 
     
    Module 4 - Teamwork - Effective working relationships
Contents:
Applies knowledge of motivation/goals theory, communication and conflict skills (previous modules) towards achieving team goals with high performance and productivity.

Explores: characteristics of effective/high-performing teams; group dynamics and communication systems; trust, respect and mutual support; using influence for win/win outcomes; decision making processes; consensus approach to goals and methods; negotiating and fulfilling team roles and tasks; "managing upwards"; balancing positive relationships with performance under pressure.

Learning Outcomes

On completing, participants should be able to:

    • Identify key components and processes in workplace relationships,
    • Identify and clarify alignment of own goals, values and needs with those of colleagues and of the enterprise,
    • Describe and discuss a win/win model of problem solving,
    • Solve workplace problems using consensus approach,
    • Collaborative effectively with others to achieve common goals,
    • Provide constructive feedback to others including peers, managers and clients.
 
     
    Module 5 - Leading & managing others
Contents:
Brings together skills and theory from previous modules within a leadership role.

Explores: Models for management and leadership; styles of situational leadership; motivating others; delegation, monitoring and improving performance; roles - leader, manager, mentor, coach; systematic and strategic thinking; facilitating group processes (eg business meetings, consultations); facilitating individuals' development.

Learning Outcomes
On completing, participants should be able to:

    • Initiate innovation and problem solving processes in the workplace,
    • Facilitate teams and individuals to implement plans and achieve performance targets,
    • Monitor and facilitate development of competence in others,
    • Provide guidance and support to individuals in the workplace,
    • Adapt leadership styles to individuals and situations as appropriate,
    • Use contacts and networks effectively.
