Sets: Dion-V Base,
Necropolis, and Cavern City Background

The history of Dion, is apparently a long one, that only adds to the both the mysteries of the Algol’s origins and to the secrets still held by Muria.

The first of the Algolian modern space holdings, the crater named Horizon, that holds Dion-5 base, was the sight of the first moon landing, in 1503. The Kargan’s out of their pride and to show off their technology might sent a rocket ship to orbit, land, and return from Dion. The Kargans were unknowingly far more successful than intended. Not only did Dion seem to be in the early stages of supporting life, but the Kargan crew in scouting for a landing spot discovered the ruins of large artificial structure on Dion and therefore landed there to claim the moon and structure in the name of Karga. A quick survey of the ruins revealed little more than it was very old and still in operational as the Kargan crew were not equipped for exploring the base and had no scientists among them. However, since the structure was able to support the Kargans, Karga was quick to act, and decided to keep the three man crew of the mission on Dion to guard the structure until a another team could relieve them. Publicly, Karga announced that, due to a malfunction in the life support, the men had died before they could return to Algol.

The discovery of the Dion’s condition to support life, and especially the ruins,. was kept under tight security with the KAAVAAK.

The when the second Kargan mission came, it was a crew of elite crack squad of KAAVAAK, who allowed the first team to return home in their craft only to have the life-support malfunction, thanks to KAAVAAK covert sabotage, making the lie a truth. Publicly the second team buried the first team and set up a small prefabricated shelter, and lived there for four months, before returning to Algol. However, in truth, they did stay for only four months, but intensely studied the ruins and the emerging biosphere surface conditions. The finds where both interesting and to only raise more questions. When the second Kargan team left Dion, they assured stake by leaving some ‘security’ devices behind.

In 1512 The Elarans got wind that the Kargans had found something on Dion, and therefore sent their own small crack elite team, to "borrow" the Kargan shelter and investigate. After a few mishaps the Elarans took out the rest of the Kargan ‘booby-traps’.

The Kargans, enraged that Elarans had "invaded" their territory, sent a strike team to kill them. However the Elarans were ready and critically hit the Kargan strike team's shuttle with portable artilleraly, but the shuttle crashed into the ruins.

Both sides then ignored the moon for several years thinking the ruins destroyed and the both Kargan and Elaran teams dead, until in 1516 when the Ettarans, under the name of United Science Alliance, launched their own rocket to Dion to set up a neutral science station. When their ambitious plans succeeded, and they landed on Dion, they discovered the graves of the Kargans and Elarans killed in the skirmish of 1512. There were survivors! The three Elaran and two Kargan survivors had waited vainly for their nations to rescue them, but in time of war, they were forgotten. Thanks to the semi-operational Ruins and the proto-biosphere of Dion, they survived and had high resentment for their nations in forgetting them. The USA gave the survivors sanctuary, and began rebuilding the ruins what would later known as Dion-5. A journal kept by one Kargan survivor after the accident, detailing the three years of hell, is still kept by the commander of the base, in a place of honor. Later, after the Murian Peace, when the UAA was formed, the base was co-opted from the USA. Dion-5 is now the center of all Algolian space operations, and the command center of Overwatch.

Publicly revealed facts about the ‘Ruins’:
The ruins original name was apparently ‘New Hope’ and was set up mainly for an attempt to terraform Dion into a biosphere world able to support humanoid life and off world facility for the main colony on Algol where the Black Tower now stands. When the Aggendi attacked they wiped out the outpost within five minutes before attacking the colony on Algol. However New Hope was able to warn the Black Tower colony of the Aggendi, giving enough time for some sort of evacuation and defence to be set up, which may have been the reason humans survived the Aggendi genocidal attack.

In 800 AY, Muria was discovered by a Elaran/Karga merchant envoy when they spoted a launch of a rocketship to orbit. This may show of lost technology may have been the catalyst in Elaran and Karga breakdown of trust as each side wanted sole control over Muria; if they could get past the great invisible barrier around the Muria content. That launch from Muria was one a few dozen done at the time to mainly to salvage any possible surviving technology and knowledge. In one of last few missions, the Dion Ruins self-repair systems were set off, and by the time the Karagans landed some 400 years more than half of the Dion Ruins were repaired and operational. Even the Terraforming system had kicked in by that time. Unfortunately for the terraforming, it seems Dion cannot support a viable biosphere beyond simple life without the Dion Ruins constantly processing the atmosphere.

Though the Dion Ruins can repair itself with some fair degree, there are certain key components it cannot repair. Such as armaments and the force field generator (which Muria is returning and reinstalling the generator early in the 1520 AY). Current theory is that though the self-repair system is advanced, even my modern Algol understanding, it isn’t a complete ‘Techno-Organic’ or ‘Regeneration’ system. It may be that the memory for tech specs in repairing certain components my have been irreplaceable lost due to the Aggendi attack some many thousands of years ago. Proof of this is for modern repairs in the gaps in the system remain untouched by the repair-system as it is not recognized. The self-repair system may have also just never been meant to be used for so long. Either way, whatever the self-repair system can repair and maintain is as good as if it were built just yesterday.

Under Karga reclamation, the Ruins was called ‘Khorizont’, under Elaran control it was called ‘Elhorizon’, and under USA it was named ‘Ethoraza’.

Dion Base has increased a shared knowledge in the some of the lost arts to Algol’s heritage, but the dynamics of full understanding the technology involved is at least five to ten years off.

Modern use of Dion is three fold: First Dion-V, is the home headquarters for UAA Overwatch. Second, Dion-V is a warehouse for archaeologists to seeking truths of Algol’s past and regaining some of the lost technology of their ancestors. Third, Dion-V is the launching and supply base for all space going ventures.

The base of Dion-5's growing at an astonishing rate.
