Railway Station At Huai Hua, Passengers With Luggage Enter Station. Woman Taxi Driver Copes With Highway Code Of Pedestrians, Cyclists, Pigs And Water Buffalo
October, 1995
In October '95 the Railway station at Huai Hua was my target. On arriving in Beijing from Paris, I was met at the airport by Zhang then a few days later we flew to Changsha, staying for a short time before taking the overnight train to Huai Hua and there being met by Tang. We were booked into a hotel which overlooked the entrance to the railway station,
and from the second floor window we were able to watch the greetings and farewells of the passengers as they arrived or departed from a very busy station, many of them loaded with much luggage of one type or another, which would be piled on the luggage racks, under the seats, and often in the corridors. I have learned from experience that it is wiser to travel light !
Having settled everything in the hotel, Tang and I went out in the misty morning to a pavement table of a restaurant near the hotel and enjoyed quite a number of freshly made steamed dumplings for our breakfast, then returned to await the arrival of our taxi which would take us to Pai Lou for my second visit to Tangs family home. The taxi driver was an attractive young woman, very confident, and once we were on our way, it was quite apparent that she had much experience of driving on roads and through towns where sometimes cyclists and pedestrians and even pigs and water buffalo demand right of way, having a Highway Code of their own making.
