Travel in China for the Chinese people has always been part of their lifestyle, when they could afford to do so. Now travel by aeroplane has become more affordable and by train more available. Travel in family groups to the capital Beijing is enjoyed by the people of China as much as the foreign visitors enjoy their visits to a city which has developed rapidly during the past twelve years into a major center for tourists and business men. Travel by aeroplane for many children in China is no mystery to them and they go with their parents confidently throughout their country, and for the lucky ones, to countries in the "Outside World". The children have taken to this means of transport as quickly as they take to riding water buffalo on the farms !
Travel in the countryside, and stopping at stations during the journey, becomes part of discovering how the people of China live, away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist sites. My own preference, if time is available, is to go by train as there is more to be seen. A closed compartment with four soft bunks is more comfortable, but a six bunk open compartment carriage is more exciting! Go light, was the advice given to me by my Chinese friends, so I have learned not to take too much burdensome luggage.
