Ferret Needs

Ferret care is not complicated.  It requires persistence and commitment to maintain their comfort, nutrition, and safety.  Here we will try to cover what you need for healthy and happy ferret.

CAGE :   The cage you have for you ferret is his home.  It's castle if you may.  It will be the time he spends in when you are not home and it's place to sleep.  So spare no expense.  In the cage you need a litter box (or more) depending on how many occupants you have.  You need a good sized water bottle for a fresh supply of water.  For sleeping you need some hammocks and/or towels, old shirts.  If you use shirts make sure all buttons and tags are removed.  You need a food bowl.  One that attaches to the cage is good or a heavy dog food bowl so that it is not easily tipped over.  Make sure the spacing of the cage wire is not large enough so that your fuzzy will get it's head caught.  An inch to an inch and a half is good.  Make sure the cage doors are secure and tight so to prevent any escapes.  Once out and unwatched you ferret can get  into trouble and hurt or even killed.

Ferret Proofing :     This is a never ending task.  Your ferret needs a safe and open space to run and play.  If at all possible keep the kitchen off limits.  Many ferret have gotten seriously hurt and killed by stoves flames and refrigerator fans.  If you have them in the kitchen area make sure you block access to these areas securely.
Furniture :  Watch recliners and sofa beds.  They can be crushed in the mechanics if these items.  Also watch to see that they cannot get trapped or eat the foam that may be inside the furniture.
Wires :  Spray wires with Bitter Apple spray to keep them from chewing and getting electrocuted from them.  Try if you can to keep wires out of their reach.  Wrapping them in tin foil has been said to work to because they do not care for the texture of foil.
Basics :  Get on the floor and look around.  If there are any small holes or openings.  A ferret will get into such small openings. So block off any of these openings.  Block off any rooms you do not want your ferrets in.  Never under estimate your ferret.  They are very determined and will test all that you throw at them.

Play Time :  Ferret need at least 3 to 4 hours a day of exercise.  So make sure you can allow this time for them.  Interaction with them is also a key to bonding with your ferret and forming trust.

VETS :  Be sure you find a vet that has experience with ferrets.  Your ferret's health and happiness depend on the correct treatment.

FOOD :  The food you choose to give your ferret is very important.  Your ferret need a high protien, high fat, and low fiber food.  Our favorite here is Totally Ferret.  I think it is one of the best.  Others have their own favorites to give to their ferrets.  Make sure Meat or chicken is one of the first ingredients.  Kitten and cat foods are used but, again wathc you ingredients close to make sure your fert is getting what it needs.
