NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING
What is NDT ?
These days, Non-Destructive Testing -NDT for short- plays a
very important role in safety and quality in our society.
Few manufactured products can be guaranteed to be perfect
without any inspection or quality control, so that either samples must be
extracted for testing or some sort of overall Non-Destructive
Test (NDT) must be devised. With fabricated items
such as, for instance, weldments, where a considerable degree of constructional
skill is needed, it is even more important that a comprehensive system of
non-destructive testing be applied.
Most NDT is designed to discover defects
in materials, after
which a decision is made as to whether the defect is significant from the
point-of-view of service life, but NDT is also used for checking assemblies and
for the development of manufacturing processes and for research.
The essential feature of NDT is that the test process itself
produces no deleterious effects on the material or structure under test.
Non-Destructive Testing makes the invisible become
visible and has built up a tremendous reputation
with regards to guaranteeing safety.
There are many methods of NDT, so that some skill and
experience is needed in choosing the most appropriate technique for a particular
application, from the point-of-view of technique performance, speed and economy,
sensitivity etc.
