Since it's inception, WHEEL has been working in the community on a number of different fronts, including:
Established and active mentoring program for girls in grades 8th and 9th at West Middle and Statesville High Schools. Adopted a family with two young teenaged girls to purchase clothing and personal items for the year. Partnered with the NAACP's Education Committee in the sponsoring of the "Let's Talk About It" educational youth rallies at the Bentley Center in Spring of 2002. Partnered with the sponsoring groups of the Juneteenth Celebration 2002. Sponsored three positive and informational social events for 3rd through 5th graders at Statesville Middle School. Organized and operated the concessions at the Statesville City Classic 2001. Partnered with the NAACP and other community groups in Voter Registration/Poll Day 2001 and 2002. Attended school board meetings to show support for the maintenance of programs that directly impact our communities and our population. Volunteered and proctored the State End of Grade Tests at West Middle School. Began a book club, presently concentrating on reading the works of African-American authors.
