| During Week 1 |
We will read and discuss the following collateral readings: "Why Read
Literature," "Interpreting Literature," "Elements of A Narrative," and
"Realism." In addition, we will be introduced to Mark Twain and his work. |
| During Week 2 |
We will read and discuss the following collateral readings: "Regionalism/Local
Colorist," and "Feminism /Patriarchy." In addition we will read and discuss
the works of : Bret Harte, Sara Orne Jewett, Kate Chopin, and Charlotte
Perkins Gillman. We will discuss feminism and its influence on literature
of this period. |
| During Week 3 |
We will enter a discussion of literary realism , what it means, how
it came to develop in America, and give special attention to identifying
realism in the work of William Dean Howells and Henry James.," We will
read "Editha," and "Daisy Miller." |
| During Week 4 |
We will be introduced to the influence of Naturalism and Muckraking
and their respective influences upon the literature of this period.
The discussion will include the works of Stephen Crane, Ambrose Bierce,
and Sherwood Anderson. |
| During Week 5 |
We will explore the Chicago School of Poetry and The Chicago Renaissance
and the corresponding effects upon poetic works by Carl Sandburg,
Ezra Pound, Edwin Arlington Robinson, TS Eliot, Robert Frost, William Carlos
Williams, and Marianne Moor. In addition we will read and study the collateral
reading, "How To Explicate A Poem." |
| During Week 6 |
We will learn about The Harlem Renaissance and its effect upon American
Literature. We will be introduced to the works of Langston Hughes, Jean
Toomer, Zora Neale Hurston, and James Weldon Johnson. |
| During Week 7 |
We will discuss American Drama during the Twentieth Centry and read
Eugene ONeill's "Long Days Journey Into Night." In addition, we will
discuss Minimalism and read Bobby Ann Mason. |
| During Week 8 |
We will complete our term projects and take the final exam. |
