Civil War Medicine

In the mid-1800's the power and efficiency of weapons and artillery had hit a new high.  But for the unfortunate civil war soldier, modern medicines and practices were not quite up to par.  " The Civil War was fought," stated the Union Surgeon General, "at the end of the medical Middle Ages."  Hospitals during this time were understaffed, under qualified, unequipped, and unsanitary. These are some of the reasons why misfortunate patients referred to their stay as, "Hell on earth."
