The Fatima College Sea Scouts

Since its inception in the early 1950s, the Fatima College Sea Scouts (FCSS) has played a pivotal role in the development of both Fatima and its image as a whole. Among its most significant contributions to the College, is the very popular annual May Fair. The FCSS began the May Fair as a means of raising funds to provide for the Troops needs. Eventually, the school authorities in recognizing the feasibility of the activity, took over the running of it

The Fatima College Sea Scouts, known nationally as the 11th Trinidad Sea Scouts, was first established by Fr. Ryan and later run by Mr. Clive Pantin and in most recent times Fr. Lennox McPhillip. The current leader is Mr. Nigel Cooper, a business teacher and Form 6 Dean at Fatima College.

Group Achievements

In light of the role that the FCSS plays in maintaining the image of Fatima College, the group was able to achieve a few goals:

  • Re-establishment of the Fatima College Steel Orchestra (due to tour Atlanta, Georgia Easter 2000).

  • Certification of 10 members as internationally recognized "first-aiders" through the Red Cross.

  • Acquirement of a new national flag for the school to replace the old tattered one.

  • Provision of aid and occasional visits to homes for the handicapped and unfortunate (Princess Elizabeth home for handicapped children, St. James Infirmary)

  • Academic stability, 90% pass rate among OLevel Scouts (every Form 5 Scout but one gained entry into Form 6 in September 1999)

Regular Activities

  • Kayaking - Wednesdays or Fridays: 3:00 - 4:00 p.m

  • Swimming practice/classes - Saturdays: 2:00 - 4:00 p.m

  • Annual Christmas Brunch - late November - early December (currently our only regular fund-raising activity)

  • Group Meetings - Friday afternoons

Group Structure

A unit of Scouts in any Scout Troop is known as a Patrol. Each Patrol of Scouts is designed to be self-sufficient, hence the reason why each member of the Patrol has a specific function to carry out. Typical Patrols consist of 8 Scouts:

  1. P.L - Patrol Leader

  2. A.P.L - Assistant Patrol Leader

  3. Cook

  4. Asst. Cook

  5. QuarterMaster (stores)

  6. QuarterMaster (equipment)

  7. Fire/Fuelman

  8. Waterman

The FCSS itself consists of 8 Patrols, 5 regular and 2 Venture (senior) Scout Patrols.

Regular Scout Patrols:

Harriers, Hawks, Eagles, Gulls, Albatross

Venture Scout Patrols:

Orcas, Mantas

Responsibilities

In addition to regular Scout duties such as cleaning the Scout Den regularly and ensuring proper equipment maintenance, the FCSS also has responsibilities to Fatima College. These responsibilities include:

  • The raising and lowering of the National Flag on a daily basis on the school compound.

  • Assistance in setting up the College May Fair every year.

  • Formation of a "Guard of Honour" whenever required at all official Fatima College functions.

  • Maintenance of discipline and cleanliness at all times thus being role models to other students.

In essence, the Fatima College Sea Scouts (FCSS) alongside the Fatima College Cadet Force, is an important factor in the constant development of Fatima College and its image
