Fig.-Riots in Calcutta

The riots that engulfed Calcutta in 1946 took a heavy toll of life and property. Over 3,000 people reportedly lost their lives and scores were injured as hooligans went about seeking blood. The police's tear-gas and lathis had little effect on the rioters and the army had to be called in. A bitter backdrop had been set for the partition of India, which was to follow soon.
