Fig.-Viceroy Lord Wavell taking tour of riot-stricken Calcutta

The communal riots of 1946 were probably one of the worst that the country has seen. In this picture Viceroy Lord Wavell, accompanied by the governor of Bengal, Fredrick Burrows, and other high military and civil officers, are seen touring Calcutta's riot-stricken areas on August 25, 1946. Lord Wavell visited Muslim and Hindu relief centers where temporary shelters and hospitals were set up.
