                September 1946 saw another black moment unfold in the nation's history. Calcutta saw a bloody war between two communities who had only yesterday stood together to face the British. People started fleeing to safer areas and the military force, which was pressed, into service, set up a camp on the Esplanade Maidan where refugees waited for transport to carry them away from their homes.
