A Wall Around

Travelling around is a good opportunity
To make yourself a picture
Of mankind all around the world
How they live and how they feel
The circumstances of their existence
This is what I happened to see

Travelling around I came to many places
Villages, cities and uninhabited spaces
There was a difference between each kind
And this difference wasn't very hard to find
Up on a hill there stood a city
With an ancient cathedral but what a pity

There is a wall around a city
It's ancient, made out of stone
With legends and songs about it
And its purpose in long-gone wars
But this wall around that city
Keeps telling us to move on

Moving on I thought alright
Ancient walls are much-loved sights
But could I live within them? I don't know
I don't want to try though time would surely show
Out in the countryside between the woods and fields
There are no walls to lock the people out or in
Except those who hold the roofs against the wind and rain
But what do I see there setting my heart in pain

There is a wall around a country
It's modern, of concrete, dull and grey
With towers and watchers but without doors
To fulfill its purpose in oncoming wars
And this wall around that country
Keeps telling us that we can't stay

So I left that place and wondered
What chance freedom had in those parts
And what reasons they had to build that awful wall
And what feelings deep inside their hearts
Please forgive me but I can't believe
That this situation wouldn't make me grieve
Where is the bright world all the poems tell
I really fear that it has gone to hell

There is a wall around the hearts of the people
It's eternal and it blackens their minds
Makes them lonely, cold-hearted and tired of life
Seeing their faces I wonder how they can survive
And this wall around the hearts of the people
Keeps telling us that we should open our minds
