The Persecution of the Wolf

Besides being given a bad reputation by ignorant tales and myths, wolves has been persecuted for the simple fact that they are  viewed as a competitor for humans. Wolves have had a terrible history, and humans are to blame!! Humans have always either killed them for sport, out of hatred or because of  environmental changes.  Hatred and fear of wolves have led people to destroy large numbers of them. People despise the wolf because they fear it since it is a predator, but wolves do not attack humans. Wolves provoke farmers and ranchers by destroying sheep, cows, and other livestock.  What is not told, however is that the U.S. Government reimburses the farmers and ranchers whose livestock are killed by the wolves. Many hunters dislike the wolf because it kills game animals, such as elk and deer. In the United States, organized hunts have killed thousands upon thousands of wolves. Today there are almost half the wolves in America then there were 20 years ago.

Because of human persecution and habitat destruction, the gray wolf, once among the most widespread mammals outside the tropics, is now found in substantial numbers only in a few regions in Europe, Asia, and North America. The pure red wolf is thought to be virtually extinct in the wild as a result of hybridization with migrating coyotes. The U.S and Mexico wolves are endangered, and the Minnesota wolf packs are making a slow comeback.
