Character description: This is probably the most interesting character in the Wong Fei Hung series and movies. The old master Wong Ki Ying is Fei Hung's father. Are you now thinking that he is an old traditional man who sticks with traditions and a remind of your old ancestors? WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! Wong Ki Ying is exactly the opposite. Tsui Hark portrays him as a very open-minded man who is more willing than anyone, except Siu Qun, to learn Western technologies. He knows how to balance the good old traditions with the new technologies. He welcomes revolution. He even did a revolution himself to open Shaolin to the new era (Wong Fei Hung TV series: the Old Temple). If you already watched the Once Upon A Time in China III, you will see that while Wong Fei Hung is ignorant and a bit resent of the steam engine, Wong Ki Ying buys one to open a medicine factory. Despite of his old age, Wong Ki Ying is an energetic man who teaches Wong Fei Hung how to open his mind to new things. Besides, the Old Master is a very humorous man. You must laugh when you see his smile. Hi hi! Ki Ying likes to join Fei Hung's students in their tricks and fun. At the beginning of part III, Ki Ying disagrees with Fei Hung and Siu Qun's marriage. But the more he understands their love, the less resentful he is. Finally, he ends up with accepting it and even supporting her occasionally. Lau Shun as Wong Ki Ying: Lau Shun did an excellent job to bring Wong Ki Ying to live. Everything in him is moderate. When Ki Ying is serious, he looks serious. When he is teasing Fei Hung, he looks extremely funny. I could not stop laughing when I see his face expressions in part III and part V. What a face! |
