Welcome to my Tenkuu no Escaflowne Shrine. For those of you who don't know what Tenkuu no Escaflowne (The Vision of Escaflowne) is, it's an anime that was produced in 1996 about a seemingly ordinary high school student, Hitomi Kanzaki (she has heightened psychic abilities) whose life is utterly changed upon her encounter with the soon-to-be King of Fanelia, Van Fanel, from the distant planet of Gaea. Romance, action, drama...this anime's got it all. Like in Rurouni Kenshin, these elements are perfectly balanced enough to make Escaflowne appealing to both Shojo and Shonen audiences. For those who crave heavy character development, look no further, for this anime is perfectly suited to your taste!! On top of that, it's a short series (26 eps) and not once does it drag. Although each episode can stand up on it's own, it is more pleasurable to watch the series in order as it is very soap operatic. Now usually I'm not one for Shojo but Escaflowne's excellent blend of action and romance found even me getting emotional! =*( It is also the first series I am proud to say I completely own...since I buy the bootlegs, it usually too expensive for me to collect/own entire series, although I do own most of Rurouken. Currently, a movie is in the works. Anyway, enough with the technical aspects of this anime...LET'S HAVE SOME FUN!!! ^_~x
I generally am too lazy to write traditional episode and character summaries, as many of you may have noticed if you've visited any other rooms in my site, so get ready for another Demonic Fox Kurama Experience, as I present my tribute to ESCAFLOWNE!!!!
He's sweet, sexy, and UNDENIABLY kawaii!!! Without a doubt, Van Slezar de Fanel is my fave chara out of the whole series. He rates #1 in the Escaflowne section of my Sexy AniMALE Superstars page. Now at the time of writing that section, I hadn't seen much of Escaflowne, but my views of him haven't changed since then. In fact, after finishing the series, I loved him even more. Not to give away too much, I felt sorry for everything he had to go through...can you imagine losing your entire kingdom at the mere age of 15?!...and I thought his awkwardness towards romance was just sooo cute!!!! So what else does Van have that makes me absolutely melt....

I absolutely LOVE Van's wings!!! I love his brother's too, but more on Folken later. Yes, Van's mother Varie, was a member of the Ryuujinbito people (Dragon Gods), who were descendants of Atlantis. Having destroyed their own planet, they were seen as outcasts in Gaea. Van's father, the King of Fanelia, was reprimanded for marrying her. Sadly, Van lost both of them in childhood, along with his disgraced older brother Folken, and since put all his energies into ascending to the throne. Becoming the King of Fanelia, was no easy feat. You had to slay a dragon, then take it's core (energist) which was used to awaken and power your Guymelef (a giant robot), Escaflowne via your blood. I don't care if you disagree with me, but I think that him and Hitomi are perfect for one another. After all, she made him learn to open himself to more than just fighting. At the end of the series Van must bid Hitomi and his Esclaflowne farewell, but sets out with a new determination to rebuild Fanelia. Seiyuu Tomokazu Seki played the brooding Van, which he had plenty experience for, as he also played the brooding Kamui in the X movie. He is very versatile, as he also played (surprise!) Chichiri (NO DAA?!) in FY.

Ye-s-s-sss...Dilandau's in the house, and he's C-R-RRAZIER than ever!!! I absolutely LOVE Dilandau!!! He's such a laugh riot. I know many people find his antics disturbing (e.g. "Prick, prick, prick..."), but I find them rather amusing. My fave is when Van cut his face and he started ranting about his beautiful face being ruined. Hmmm...reminds me of the Chun Li and Vega fight from the Streetfighter II movie. In a way, you can't blame this stud, his face is undoubtedly beautiful (IMO, of course) but his deranged persona allows for some truly ugly facial shots (particularly when he loses all of his boys). Say what?! Well Dilandau-sama is the leader of the Dragon Slayers...an elite Zaibach fighting force. They exclusively use Folken's invention the "Stealth Manteau", which renders their Guymelef's invisible to the naked eye. That is if you don't happen to have psychic abilities like Hitomi and later Van. Anyway, Dilandau is pretty cocky and confident until Van annihilates the Dragon Slayers (wonderfully nicknamed by my friend Adira as his BOYZ) and his past comes back to haunt him.

Alrighty...this one's a terrible spoiler, so please scroll down if you don't want to read it. Dilandau is actually Serena Shezar, Asturia Knight Allen Shezar's (more about him later) long lost sister. So how then, did she become a he?! Well Zaibach's sorcerers (scientists) were involved in a project called the "Human Reformation Project". They kidnapped young children and conducted experiments on them. Serena Shezar was one of these children, kidnapped around the age of 5 (she/he's only 15) and thus came the birth of Dilandau Albatou. During this hellish time period, Serena was taken care of by a man-dog hybrid named Jajuka (there are a lot of hybrids on Gaea such as Van's friend Merle who is a cat-girl). It is upon Jajuka's death at the hands of Van, that Dilandau reverts to Serena. Seiyuu Minami Takayama provided the voice of Dilandau (she also did the voices for Serena...obviously, and Prince Sid) which is really cool, b/c she was Keno (also on my Sexy AniMALE Superstars page) in the Hakkenden. She did a wonderful job in all of her roles, and is truly a talented Seiyuu.

Lastly, I got myself the first soundtrack b/c I love the theme song and ending song (Mystic Eyes). I've put the TV size versions up, but when I have a little more time, I'll romanize the rest...hey, it pays to take Japanese in university!! ^_~x It truly is a wonderful album...actually I think most of the instrumentals in the series are fantastic, and I'll try to pick up more when I have more FUNDAGE!!!

This section is dedicated to the players of Escaflowne...namely Allen, and Folken. Nani?! Folken's a player? Uh huh, baby...he was macking Naria and Eriya at the same time!!! What can I say, he's a MACK!! As for Allen, *cough* Marlena...Millerna...Hitomi...what can I say, the man likes to get around. After seeing Prince Sid (his *cough* illegitimate child with Marlena) it's pretty obvious. Anyway, let's get started. Folken Lacour de Fanel is Van's mega-kawaii older brother who currently is a general of the Zaibach army (I believe his title is Chief of Staff). He was supposed to succeed his father as King of Fanelia, but during his quest for the dragon energist, he lost an arm and was saved by Lord Dornkirk, the leader of Zaibach. As he didn't return to Fanelia, his family knew he failed to defeat the dragon and his name was forever disgraced. Soon, his father passed away, then his mother went to the dragon forest in search of Folken but never returned *sob*. Meanwhile in Zaibach, Folken was given a really cool metal arm (which he hated) by Dornkirk then began his training first as a Zaibach sorceror then eventually his current position as Chief of Staff. He believed that science and unity would save Gaea, until he realized that Dornkirk had a different agenda. He then defected and persuaded the Gaean kingdoms to unite against Zaibach. Sadly, he met his end upon his confrontation with Dornkirk. Folken is #3 on my Sexy AniMALE Superstars page. Despite working for Zaibach, he is extremely sweet, as he showed compassion to the outcast Zongi, and saved Nariya and Eriya from an untimely death. Also of Ryuujinbito blood, Folken has wings *drool*, but due to his exposure to chemicals and lord-knows-what-else they have been blackened over time. In the series, he was played by Jyouji Nakata.
Allen Shezar, as mentioned earlier is a knight of the Asturian kingdom. He is a splendid swordsman, trained by Van's master Vargas, and has the reputation of being a notorious playboy. In reality however, Allen is a sweetheart, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Hitomi's first crush Amano. His first love was the Princess Marlena of Asturia who bore his illegitimate child Prince Sid. As Marlena was promised in marriage to the Duchy of Fried her child was raised as his son. Allen didn't even realize he had a son, until fled to the country with Van, Hitomi and others in order to escape Zaibach troops. Millerna is the younger sister of Marlena, with whom she also bears an uncanny resemblance. As she is also promised in marriage to the trader Dryden (also a sweetheart), Allen tries to distance himself from her so it will be easier to let her go. Unfortunately, she is strong-willed and won't let him go that easily. Her older sister Eries, thinks that Allen is only in love with her because of her resemblance to Marlena and strives to part the two, but in the end she backs off, as Dryden (whom Millerna marries during the series) chooses to let Millerna follow her own path...namely ALLEN...Dryden: "I don't deserve you...", convinced he can win her from Allen when he becomes a better person. Allen's love for Hitomi mainly arose from seeing her as his missing sister in her innocence. Hitomi was already confused as to whom she really liked (Van, Allen, Amano back on Earth), but with a little help from Folken and the Zaibach empire, who redirected fate to keep her away from Van (everytime they got close, it clouded Dornkirk's visions of the future) they temporarily fell for each other. After being reunited with Serena, Allen realized that he only saw her within Hitomi, while she realized she truly loved Van. Like most of the main characters, Allen too has a sad past. As mentioned earlier, he lost Serena in childhood, but prior to this, his father had left the family in search for the ancient world of Atlantis. His mother became depressed after Serena went missing, and died soon after. So if Allen's this cool, why isn't he on my Sexy AniMALE Superstars page? One word: HAIR!! Allen would be extremely kawaii if they changed his hairstyle, but I absolutely HATE it!! As my requirements for that page mostly stem from both personality and kawaiiness, Allen unfortunately doesn't compare with my other 3 choices. Nonetheless, I still like him, just not his HAIR. He was played by seiyuu Shinchiro Miki.
I have the honour of owning a wonderfully fan-subbed edition of this series, but I have seen a lot of the Hecto fansubs. Can you say HI-LA-RI-OUS!!! My God, they're almost impossible to take seriously!!! As you may or may not know, they like to use a lot of profanity, which is fine if it suits the chara and/or you haven't watched the series at all before, but after checking out my LD versions I found them extremely funny!! For one thing, they got almost all of the names wrong, which is understandable, as they aren't your run-of-the-mill, standard Japanese names, but it was the way they were written that really got to me. (e.g.) Van FARNEL, FALKEN DACUL de FARNEL --Folken Lacour de Fanel, NARLIA (sounds like a surfer's babe) --Nariya, HELIA --Eriya, DALUN-KARL --Dornkirk, ALEN SchezarD --Allen Schezar, and DULANDU or something like that --Dilandau. Kind of like their Hitokiri BATHOW-SAI instead of Battousai in Rurouken. I think their attempts to put our slang in their fansubs are really cute though, for instance, Dilandau's "You're sooo COOL Van!!!" or in their Shin Sen Gumi translations (I think this is what they call themselves now) "Don't be DISSIN' the ninja" --The Flame of Recca. Anyway, if you are thinking of collecting this series, make sure you pick up the LD version, but if you happen to get the HECTO version fear not, the story and animation are just as good, so you'll still enjoy yourself.
