James grew up on a military base in Nevada, so as a result, he is always rather militaristic. He was normal kid with oridnary grades, but with a great love of weapons technology. He started to work on Mobile Suits at 10 and was amazed by the technology and materials Gundams where made out of. At 13, he was given a job on the base as a Mobile Suit mechanic, because his extraordinary talents. At 15 he was given his first chance to pilot a prototype Gunndam. Soon after, he began a career as a Mobile Suit test pilot. At 16, he's an expert with Mobile Suits, surpassing veteran pilots around the world.

Despite his military background, James is firmly allied with the Rebellion. In his mind, the OZ organization is a poor excuse for a military program and needs to be removed from power.
