Relena is the pampered daughter of the Earth Alliance's vice minister for foreign affairs. Her father was responsible for the negotiations with the space colonists, an assignment which left Mr. Darlian little time for his wife and child. Her family's wealth and status made Relena the star of her private school's social scene, but did little to reduce her boredom and loneliness.

Her life was turned upside down when her father was killed by the fanatical Colonel Une. It was on that day that she learned the truth of her parentage and her nobility. She was the born queen of the lost Sanc Kingdom. When her quiet existence was disrupted by the Gundam pilots, this poor little rich girl discovered her own, previously untapped, reserves of strength and courage. Now she stands as a leader to the whole world, exuding courage, leadership, and above all else, a reverence for life and peace.
