Buck
Hollow
Mile
33.5
1/2
hour
A
0.6 mile round trip to a tall hemlock grove. You will need to park at
the Meadow Spring Parking Area. The trail will begin at the south end
of the parking area. Your destination will be huge evergreens
that are ten minutes down the Buck Hollow Trail. Be sure not to take
the Hazel Mountain Trail. Retrace your steps to complete this
hike.
Meadow Spring
Mile 33.5
1-1/2 hour
A 1.6 mile
round trip to an overlook with a view of the Shenandoah Valley. Park
at the Meadow Spring Parking Area. The trail begins just south of the
parking area across the Drive. This trail will sometimes become steep.
Meadow Spring is about 0.4 mile from the Drive, on your right, just
before the trail makes a 90-degree turn to the right. When you get to
that turn, just past it you will see ruins of a cabin that was for the
Appalachian Trail Club that burnt down in 1946. You need to walk up
trail 0.7 mile until you reach the A.T. Turn left and walk 0.1
mile to a rock viewpoint. You need to retrace your steps to complete
this 1-1/2 hour hike.
Little
Stony Man
Mile
39.1
1
hour
This
is one of my favorite hikes. The view from this is spell bounding. A
0.9 mile round trip to a panoramic view. You will have to park in the
Little Stony Man parking lot on the west side of the Drive. Take the
trail uphill 50 yards to the A.T. and turn left. This trail will climb
steadily for 1/3 mile until you reach a concrete signpost. Stay to
your right. The cliff with outstanding view is just 0.1 mile from the
post. On your left are the higher cliffs of Stony Man. Retrace your
steps to complete this 1 hour hike.
Stony
Man Nature Trail
Mile
41.7
1-1/2
hour
This
is my most favorite overview. Well worth the time. A 1.6 mile round
trip to a view. Park in the Stony Man Nature Trail Parking Area just
inside the north entrance to Skyland. Go north on A.T. for 0.4 mile.
At trail crossing, you need to leave the A.T. and go straight ahead on
the blue blazed trail until you reach the cliffs of Stony Man. Retrace
your steps to complete this 1-1/2 hour hike. No pets are allowed on
this trail.
Millers
Head
Mile
42.5
1-1/2
hour
A
1.6 mile round trip to a observation platform with nearly a 360 degree
view. You gain access by entering Sky land at the south entrance,
passed the stables and take the left paved fork of the road. You need
to park in the grass on the left of the gravel road. You will then
walk 80 yards up the paved road to the trail head sign. The trail will
continue as it switchbacks down hill and you reach a concrete marker.
Continue downhill 0.3 mile to the observation deck. The deck's view my
be blocked by growing trees, if this is the case, walk around the
observation deck to the cliff below. Retrace your steps to complete
this 1-1/2 hour hike.
