North District Hikes

Overall Run Falls

Mile 21.1

6.4 Miles Roundtrip

3 hours

This is a hike to the tallest falls in the park. This trail is a difficult one, but well worth the hike. In the mid to late summer months, there maybe little or no water in this falls. There are two ways to hike to the falls. One is from the Mathews Arm Campground and from the Hogback Overlook.

Traces Nature Trail

Mile 22.2

1-1/2 hour

This is a 1.7 mile circuit hike that shows traces of old homesites. You need to park in the Mathews Arm Campground Amphitheater parking area. Take the sidewalk to the far end of the lot. If the campground road is gated at the Drive, walk down to the amphitheatre parking area. This will make you hike a 3.1 mile and 2-1/2 hour.

Beahms Gap

Mile 28.5

20 minutes

This is a 0.4 mile circuit hike just to stretch your legs. At the Beahms Gap parking area proceed to the north end and take the trail that starts toward Byrd's Nest No. 4. In about 200 yards you will arrive at the A.T. Turn left and follow the A.T. about 300 yards to the Drive. Turn left at the Drive and return to your starting point.

Pass Mountain Summit

Mile 28.5

1-1/2 hour

This is a 1.6 mile round trip to a really nice view. AT the Beahms Gap parking area, go to the south end of the lot and cross the Drive. Take the A.T. until the trail returns to woods. At this point there is a large rock on the left. Turn right, leave the trail for about 50 yards, bearing right, to a fine viewpoint. Retrace your steps to complete this 1-1/2 hour hike.

Pass Mountain Overlook

Mile 30.1

15 minutes

This is a 0.25 mile circuit walk. You will need to park at the Pass Mountain Overlook. Go straight out from the overlook to the rock ledge. Continue downhill, following the trail around to the left and returning to the starting point.
