Troubleshooting hardware problems in windows 98

if you happen to have some hardware problems with windows 98 here are some helpful steps for you to take.

- Open Device Manager, from system icon in control panel. Within the system properties dialogue box, click the device manager. Check the following steps to decide on the appropriate action

1. Is the device listed in the device manager?

YES- IF the device is listed in the device manager but still does not wok, skip to the number 2.

NO- If the device is not listed then we can assume that the reason for this because the operating system failed to detect it at first. Run Add new Hardware wizard to see if windows detects the missing device.

- if your device shows up after, then it did not have the correct drivers installed for the device.

2. The device is listed in the device manager

i). Check for more than one listing of the device- In this case remove all the devices by highlighting one of the devices and clicking on remove button. Restart the computer and run the new hardware wizard.

- if the device works after this, then the problem was that duplicate instances of the device drivers were installed.

ii) The device is listed but shows with a red X over its icon - this simply means that the device have been disabled within the hardware profiles. E.g.

To enable it, uncheck the disable in this hardware profile option. You will need to reboot.

- if the device works after this it is because it was disabled. If it shows in the hardware profiles with a yellow ! overwriting the icon, then check the profiles for the device. Click the resources tab and check the conflicting device list.

- check if the change settings button is grayed out. If it is then uncheck the Use Automatic Settings and try to change the resource settings again

- if it is not grayed out, highlight the conflict in the resource setting section and click Change Setting Button. Select a new setting for the resource and check for conflicts until a non conflicting resource is found

- if you find a non conflicting configuration and it still foes not work repeat the process for which the device conflicts. Should there be no change, then the device requires some firmware configuration, jumper settings change or reallocation of resources in the computers BIOS. Contact the device manufacturer.
