The accumulation of slag from the blast furnaces at Carnforth takes place rapidly. Space set aside for slag has been used up. The quantity of slag turned out annually exceeds 120,000 tons. The plan has been carried out to convey this byproduct onto the sea shore. On Wednesday (14.7) the first bogies of slag were tipped after being conducted along a new line which starts from the ironworks, runs under the Midland bridge which crosses the North Western line then runs parallel to the Midland line for some distance and eventually crossing the Furness line on a new bridge on Thwait's Farm.
