Watching Brief for station campaign RAIL campaigners aiming to put the redevelopment of Carnforth station back on track are set to meet with Heritage Lottery officials. Representatives from the Friends of Carnforth station hope to meet Lottery chiefs tomorrow to determine the best way forward after a recent bid for cash was turned down. The Friends held a public meeting last night in order to drum up greater interest and enthusiasm from the public for their plans to revamp the station. Campaigners are aiming to raise around l.5m towards the renovation costs and have already received pledges from the Rural Development Agency Lancaster Council and Lancashire County Council. A spokesman for the project said: "Discussions are continuing both with the Heritage Lottery Fund and the other funding bodies. It appears likely that, with the confirmation of the support expressed to date, we will raise the bulk of the necessary funds. With the support of the general public the project will be achieved. "Carnforth station was made famous as the scene of the romantic meeting between Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson in Brief Encounter. "The cost of the trust's proposals will be between lm and l.5m. Support has been widespread". Lancashire Evening Post 9 th June 1999
