Bid to
regenerate Carnforth station
CARNFORTH station, the setting for
'Brief Encounter', a British film classic, is the subject of a refurbishment bid.
In an effort to prevent further decay of the buildings, Carnforth Station & Railway
Trust Company has agreed a provisional lease with Railtrack for the buildings. Chartered
surveyors lrvine Taylor, representing the trust, say that Railtrack's station
refurbishment programme for Carnforth will complement its proposals for the buildings.
Costing between lm - l.5m, the plan is to create a visitor centre outlining the
impact of railways on the town and in the North-West plus the reinstatement of the
refreshment room made famous in the film.
The Railway Heritage Trust has committed 236.000 to the plan and applications to
North-Western funding agencies for a further 1m are under consideration
Railway Magazine. August 1999 Issue.
