The California Maritime Academy is part of the California State University system, a university dedicated to the maritime professions and services (U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Merchant Marine, plus engineering and other professions dealing with the marine environment).
The Naval Science program at C.M.A. is part of the U.S. Merchant Marine Reserves, a component of the U.S. Naval Reserve community. The Reserves is made up of licensed deck and engineering officers. The Merchant Marine Reserve (MMR) was created by Congress to ensure that the Merchant Marine can operate efficiently with the U.S. Navy in times of national emergency.
Many of CMA's students and graduates enter private industry rather than the military, but in doing so choose to also serve as part of the U.S. Naval Reserves as midshipmen. They receive naval reserve training for this purpose at CMA.
The Placer County Council is proud to support these fine men and women as they prepare for not only their own future, but our country's as well.
