BLACKROSE ENTERPRISES

`YOU NEED A NEW GARAGE

You say you want a piece of the Silicon Valley pie, bunky? You've got big ideas for new software, hardware, or a Web site, but you don't have a clue how to get started? You tried calling your favorite venture capitalist, only to be told, "Don't call us, we'll call you." What can you do, short of finding a sugar daddy? Well, Crusty knows, and he's here to tell you. The founders of Garage.com hope you'll visit their new site. Garage.com http://www.garage.com is founded by Rich Karlgaard, editor of Forbes ASAP and cofounder of Upside Magazine; Craig Johnson, former senior partner at Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati and now hair and cofounder of the Venture Law Group; and Guy Kawasaki, former president of ACIUS and current Apple Computer Fellow. Their mission "is to empower high-technology Entrepreneurs."Garage.com expects to make its mission a reality and your high-tech idea a hit by "providing resources to high-technology entrepreneurs such as reference material, expert forums (for example, legal, banking, and venture capital), information links, and discussion boards. In addition, the site will match prescreened technology start-up companies in the "seed stage" with high-quality, prescreened angels, venture capitalists, and corporate investors. In short, the service matches up "two guys or gals in a garage" with the big bucks boys and girls. The Garage.com Web site covers three areas. A Public section offers resources and editorial content of interest to potential entrepreneurs and costs nothing. The Garage section is password-protected and is for Garage.com clients only. Lastly, a section that Garage.com modestly calls "Heaven" provides resources and features for Garage.com investors. In the best Silicon Valley startup tradition, Garage.com asks site visitors to "build brand awareness by clicking here and buying a Garage.com T-shirt. We support the grand tradition of great Silicon Valley startups: Print the T-shirt before you ship the product!" And in what ranks as a major renunciation of the smoke and mirrors that accompany many new software and Web ventures, Garage.com freely admits what it cannot do: "If you want to learn how to fix your car or buy aluminum siding, we just can't help you. :-) "

EARTHCAM

"We never close" reads this fascinating site's tagline; and indeed, it never does. What is "it"? A huge links list of many of the existing Web cam sites available on the Internet. A Web cam is a camera that broadcasts real-time images over the Web. Cam voyeurs anywhere can tune in here and choose from a shot of the Golden Gate Bridge, updated every 3 minutes; a behind-the-scenes live shot of the CNN newsroom, updated every 3 minutes; daily updates of a college student's freezer; and everything—and we do mean everything—in between. Well, except the adult variety.

HONKWORM

Honkworm (no, we don't know what it means either) wants to promote a "new" idea on the Internet: corporate entertainment. Before you start yawning, read on. The idea is somewhat unique: Working with companies to design original, episodic entertainment that will draw visitors back to sites again and again. To demonstrate what they mean, Honkworm's creative teamsters have posted a half-dozen RealVideo vignettes of their work. Most are actually pretty funny and could fly--if teamed with the right corporate tie-ins.
