MY VERY FAVORITE
There’s a way to arrange the files in the Favorites folder. Here’s how. On the Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 menu, choose Favorites. When the list opens, grab a Favorite and use the mouse to drag it to a new position. You can continue this process until you have all the items arranged exactly as you want.
Note that the same procedure works on the Start menu. Just click Start, Programs and start dragging files. You can change the file locations only in Programs.
NOW THAT’S SMOOTH
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 uses smooth scrolling by default. Some people prefer smooth scrolling and some don’t. To determine which scrolling method you prefer, navigate to a Web page that contains a lot of text and press Page Down and Page Up to see how smooth scrolling looks. Now choose View, Options and, when the Options dialog box opens, click the Advanced tab. Deselect the Use Smooth Scrolling check box. Click Apply to apply your change and then click OK to close the dialog box.
Use Page Up and Page Down again to scroll through the page.
DUALING BROWSERS
This is a question that we get often from people thinking of installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 4. Can you run it with other browsers? The answer is yes, and no. You can’t run Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 on the same computer unless you’re running them in two separate operating systems (such as Windows 95 and Windows NT). When you install IE 4 on a system that’s running IE 3, say goodbye to IE 3. However, you can run Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 (or 3) along with any Netscape browser.
WHEN IE 4 PLAYS FAVORITES
Some time ago, we published a tip suggesting a way to organize the Favorites folder. We suggested that you choose Favorites, Organize Favorites. We pointed out that you can move a file from one folder to another by simply right-clicking the file and then choosing Cut from the menu. You would then open the new folder, right-click in it, and choose Paste.
Since we published this tip, we’ve received e-mail from some readers who say it doesn’t work for them. We recently discovered that this problem is due to a bug that exists in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0. The bug does not exist in Version 4.01 (which is what we’re using).
MISSION CONTROL, PREPARE TO LAUNCH
You can easily add Control Panel to the Quick Launch toolbar. All you
have to do is right-click the desktop and choose New, Folder. Name the folder
ControlPanel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}
Exactly as shown here. We suggest that you actually copy this line and paste it into the new folder’s name. Press Enter.
The new Control Panel folder is now on your desktop. Use the right-mouse button to drag the folder to the Quick Launch toolbar. When you release the mouse button, a menu will open. From this menu, choose Move Here.
