AUTOMATIC DIALING
Several readers have asked about getting Dial-Up Networking to automatically call the ISP when they run Microsoft Internet Explorer 4. These readers report that IE 4 has been running OK and automatically connecting—then something happens, and the connection is no longer automatic.
In most cases, all you need to do is tell IE 4 which connection to use. In IE 4, choose View, Internet Options. When the dialog box opens, click the Connection tab. Select the radio button labeled Connect to the Internet using a modem. Now click Settings and make sure your ISP dialup is selected. Enter the User name and Password and click OK. When you get back to the Internet Options dialog box, click OK again.
ESCAPING THE TRAP
Have you ever been happily surfing the Net when, almost without warning, you find yourself caught in a frame trap? You keep on browsing the Web, but everywhere you go, the pages remain in the frame. So, while you’re browsing, the advertising is blinking, flashing, and perhaps even yelling at you.
Don’t close the connection just to escape the frame. Instead, right-click the URL you’d like to visit (minus the frame, that is) and choose Open in New Window.
PRINT WHAT YOU WANT
Sometimes we need to print a Web page for our files or send a printout to someone who needs hard copy. Say you need to print four copies of a five-page Web site. The easiest way to handle the printer is to collate the copies. To do this, choose File, Print (or press Ctrl-P). When the Print dialog box opens, under Copies, select the number of copies you want to print. Now select the check box labeled Collate and click OK to start the print job.
Want to print a Web page without any fuss? Just press Ctrl-P, Enter. The Web page will print using your default printer with the default settings.
Want to print all the shortcuts that are on the Web page? Press Ctrl-P and select the check box labeled Print Shortcuts in a Table at The End Of The Document. Click OK to begin printing.
If the Web page uses frames, don’t forget that you need to select each frame and then press Ctrl-P to print each.

SHUT THE WINDOWS ON YOUR WAY OUT
If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 with Active Desktop installed, you now have a quick and easy way to close several programs at the same time. To check this out, run several programs. Now, move down to the Taskbar and press and hold the Ctrl key. Click the icon of each program you want to close and then right-click one of the selected icons. When the menu opens, choose Close. All the selected programs will close at once.
